The fact that Julie Benning wrote that editorial critical of "life imprisonment" indicates to me that she was hanging out with an older ex-con who was putting ideas in her head. Yet I don't think he was the actual killer. Rather it was an acquaintance tied to the ex-con. The tavern holds the key. 35 years later it might as well have been 1875 with nothing to go on.
